Four decades since the debut of the original “Beverly Hills Cop,” Eddie Murphy is back as Axel Foley in the highly anticipated fourth installment of the legendary franchise.

Netflix unveiled a first-look snapshot on their Instagram page featuring Murphy sporting Foley’s iconic Detroit Lions jacket, announcing the arrival of “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley” slated for next year.

“Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley brings Eddie Murphy back in his most iconic role,” read Netflix’s caption.

Tudum disclosed that along with Murphy, the new movie will see the return of original “Beverly Hills Cop” stars Judge Reinhold, Paul Reiser, John Ashton, and Bronson Pinchot, joined by newcomers Kevin Bacon, Taylour Paige, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Mark Molloy is set to direct.

In an interview with Empire magazine, the film’s producer Jerry Bruckheimer revealed that Gordon-Levitt will play Foley’s new partner, emphasizing, “they are hysterical together.”

Bruckheimer highlighted the unpredictable brilliance Murphy brings to the set, likening each day of filming with Murphy to a nostalgic throwback to the ‘80s.

The original “Beverly Hills Cop” premiered in 1984, marking a pivotal role for Murphy. It received an Oscar nod for best original screenplay and led to two sequels—“Beverly Hills Cop II” in 1987 and “Beverly Hills Cop III” in 1994.

Directed by Martin Brest, the first film starred Murphy, Reinhold, Pinchot, Lisa Eilbacher, Reiser, and Ashton, following Foley, a rebellious cop from Detroit, as he probes the murder of a childhood friend in Beverly Hills.

While specific plot details and release dates for “Axel Foley” remain undisclosed, Bruckheimer assured Empire that the sequel will uphold the franchise’s essence, emphasizing its emotional core.

“No matter the humor or action, it’s all about tugging at the heartstrings,” he underscored.
