Sandra Day O’Connor being sworn in on Sept. 9, 1981. Justice O’Connor was the first female supreme court justice. She died at XX.

As Justice Sandra Day O’Connor took her oath at the Supreme Court, it marked a pivotal moment for countless women and girls, myself included, contemplating futures in law. It stirred a realization: if she could ascend in the legal sphere, why couldn’t I? Despite receiving no offers in private practice post-graduation from Stanford Law School, where she ranked among the top 10%, Justice O’Connor’s tenacity and government service propelled her to become an influential figure in Arizona and, ultimately, the “FWOTSC” (First Woman On The Supreme Court).

In 1981, her induction resonated, signaling that women could excel at the legal profession’s zenith. She kindled hope across generations, and her optimism’s spark endures today. As the inaugural, remarkably successful female justice, she paved the path for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s ascent years later, subsequently leading to the appointment of the four women currently on the US Supreme Court. Those women in leadership positions today were once the young girls inspired by the momentous event of 1981.

The passing of Justice O’Connor signifies the loss of an American legend. Her legacy transcends being the first female US Supreme Court Justice; she shattered the glass ceiling, altering the legal landscape irrevocably for the better. Personally acquainted individuals knew her as a rare blend of brilliance, humor, kindness, and a resolute toughness forged in her upbringing on a cattle ranch. Her dedication to country, court, and family, including her clerks, was profound. Her absence will be felt deeply, and her legacy must endure.

Owing to declining health and seclusion from public life, Justice O’Connor faded from our national discourse in recent years, and her accomplishments might evade recognition by today’s youth. In 1981, the legal domain wasn’t receptive to women; only 7.3% of federal judges were women, as per USCourts.gov. Nonetheless, Justice O’Connor’s nomination and confirmation that year reshaped history as the first female associate justice on the US Supreme Court.

The spark of hope ignited by Justice O’Connor in my childhood became a blazing fire. After law school, I had the privilege of serving as her law clerk, granting me a glimpse of her personal side beyond the public persona. To me, she leaves a second legacy as an exceptionally compassionate individual.

On a personal level, Justice O’Connor exuded the confidence of a rancher but possessed an incredible grace, consideration, and boundless energy, infusing humanity into every interaction. She displayed genuine care for those around her, particularly her clerks.

For instance, preceding oral arguments on weekends, she’d convene with us to discuss cases—an ordinary occurrence at the court. However, her conclusion was exceptional. Justice O’Connor prepared a warm, homemade meal using a crockpot brought to chambers, inviting us to dine together after our meeting.

Amidst demanding workloads, she organized field trips to ease our stress, visiting museums, gardens, or strolling along the National Mall.

A significant event organized by Justice O’Connor—a sea kayaking trip down the Potomac River for her clerks and partners—indirectly led to my marriage. Unmarried at the time, I was uncertain whom to invite. Justice O’Connor, collaborating with the late Justice Antonin Scalia, orchestrated for me to partner with Ara Lovitt, whom she jokingly referred to as “that Scalia clerk who keeps hanging around Chambers.” A few years later, Ara and I were married. Justice O’Connor even sent “SO’C Grand Clerk” T-shirts to our children. Her spirit was unparalleled.

Beyond her historical significance, Justice O’Connor embodied genuine concern, and her decisions’ impact marked her tenure on the court. I mourn her deeply but remain eternally grateful for her indelible influence on our nation and for the privilege of knowing her.
